Packers fall on late field goal in HOT-lanta. Falcons 20 – Packers 17.

Michael "The Burner" Turner

Tough day for the Packers today, they played a good game but came up just short.

If there was one play that turned the tide of the game in the Falcons’ favor, it would have to be the fumble in the end zone by the Packers. At that point, it looked like the Packers were going to take control of the game, but instead they gave Atlanta the ball and it led to a huge momentum swing.

For me the difference in the game was the running backs. The Packers could get nothing going at all on the ground, and their running backs even had negative yards rushing. It is going to be a problem when your quarterback is the leading rusher on the team. On the flip side, Micheal “the burner” Turner was solid for the Falcons, gaining over 100 yards on the ground and helping the Falcons control the clock.

The Packers didn’t have that luxury and so they had to rely on the legs and the arm of Aaron Rodgers. I thought he played an excellent game, minus the goal-line fumble.

The running backs for the Packers had a terrible game, and the Packers o-line just didn’t open up many holes for them. Give credit to Atlanta’s defense for that, they completely shut down the run and made the Packers offense one-dimensional.I still felt like the Packers were the better team on the field, but obviously the ball just didn’t bounce their way very many times in this game.

The Packers defense played well and they shut down one of the premiere receivers in the NFL today – “Hot” Roddy White. I am going to say that is mostly thanks to Charles Woodson. The only thing that the defense could have done better was to stop the run, but it is nearly impossible to stop Michael Turner, he is some kind of freak of nature.

The only other thing the defense could have done was force a turnover, but Atlanta’s offense is very effective at not turning the ball over and making the most of their opportunities.

For me, the plays of the game were both made by Aaron Rodgers on 4th down – the escape and the shovel pass for a key first down on the last drive and also the extension of a play until he could fire the ball to Jordy “White Lightning” Nelson in the endzone for the touchdown to tie the game. That was just an incredible job by Rodgers escaping the rush and waiting until someone could finally get open. That late touchdown of course tied the game at 17.

You know what happened next, of course, a face-mask penalty on the ensuing kickoff and some good throws by Matt Ryan led to the game-winning field goal for Atlanta with close to no time left on the clock. The packers had one chance at the Hail Mary, but they came up short. Final score 20-17 in a real barn-burner. You can’t say it wasn’t exciting, though.

Speaking of burners, I’ve decided to call this Michael Turner’s Burner Burger. Don’t Burn your mouth off! Eat this and feel better about the Pack’s loss. Of course they play San Fransisco next week and I will be looking for them to bounce back in a big way. Those sourdough-heads don’t stand a chance.

Happy reading, happy eating and GO PACK GO!!!

What were the packers thinking running two quarterback sneaks in a row in the first place?

I couldn’t agree with you more Ryan. I think they were trying that because the running game had been so poor up to that point. I still think that it is extremely stupid to put their best player at risk of injury like that. Next time either hand it off or pass it McCarthy! Or else he might find himself on the unemployment line…
